Landslide forces rerouting of the Tour de France
Talk about human-earth relationships! The image above shows a slow-moving landslide that is developing along the Tour de France route, which has forced closure of a tunnel and rerouting of the 20th stage of the race. In the photo above, look at the road in the top right corner (its the wide curved white thing). Just uner the road you can see a fracture zone where the hillslope below is sliding down towards the lake. This will be the scarp of the landslide, once it eventually lets loose. It is currently moving at 5-15 centimeters (that's 2-6 inches) per day.
