July 5 Flooding in downtown Johnson City
Flooding in Johnson City - again!
According to Weather Underground, Johnson City received 1.22 inches of rain on Friday, 0.3 inches on Saturday, and 1.42 inches on Suncay. That's nearly three inches of rain in three days. To put that in perspective, normal rainfall is 3-4 inches per MONTH in the Tri-Cities.
So, we get nearly a month's worth of rainfall in three days. The ground is saturated, and lo and behod, the city floods. The new Founder's Park is designed to help mitigate flooding, but was never intended to solve the flooding problem (which is what many Johnson City residents seem to think). Did anyone experience the flooding first hand yesterday? How did the U-Haul site hold up? Based on some of the photos I saw of Brush Creek at Founders Park, it looks like there were some pretty nice standing waves indicating strong flow and high velocities.
